Would you know If Your Website was Down?

8 hours 45 minutes 36 seconds yearly is the total downtime that a website may have on a server who guarantees 99.9% uptime.

I don’t know about you but 8hrs a year seems like a lot when profitability is at stake. And those stats are just in regards to possible hosting issues.

There are many other reasons that a website may go down that are not necessarily related to hosting like: hacker attacks, DNS issues and software issues.

Because I monitor all my clients’ websites, I receive notices when the are unresponsive. I immediately try to fix any issues and after I’ve ruled out all causes under my control, I contact my client. Every time this has happened it’s been because the client had not renewed their domain. Once they pay the domain renewal the site is live again. (And now I keep track of my client’s domain renewal schedules as well.)

If your website goes down and you don’t notice it, there is a chance of loss of revenue – greater the longer it’s down. Whose monitoring your website’s uptime? How would you know if went down?
